There are lots of books on friendship (of which I honestly haven’t read very many). But today, as I was thinking about friends, I got two ideas for how to be a good friend. I know…TWO!?! That’s it?? Hey, I am sure that the Oprah’s, Dr. Phil’s and the like have suggested a myriad of ways to be a friend. Which is great. But today I’m only feelin’ two. And I’d be remiss if I forced some long list on you. So, two it is! 🙂

1) Hold your friends in the open palm of your hand. Not in a clutched fist. That way, when God, for His reasons, moves them on, it won’t be so painful when they go.  Friendships should be gently held, not obsessively gripped.

2) When your friend comes to you for encouragement, don’t respond with SO much of YOUR experience that your friend feels like what he/she is going through isn’t as bad as what you went through. That’s called “one-up’ing” and it’s not being a good friend.  DO share from your experiences (that’s called WISDOM & it’s biblical!) but don’t share so much, and share for so long that they walk away feeling unheard, discouraged or one-up’ed.

That’s all! Hope this encourages someone today. Thanks for driving by.
