Jealousy isn’t one of those “sexy” sins. I am more likely to go up to someone and say, “Hey, I’ve been impatient with you,” or “Hey, I’ve struggled to trust you.” But rare is the day I go up to someone and say, “Hey, I’m jealous of you.” It’s just one of those secret-sins that we don’t like to confess and we even masquearade in the names of “insecurity” or “poor self image.” But if we call it what it is….it is ugly and it is a sin and it has no place in your heart or mine. We are better than that! Here is the formula I’ve used to help me attack, jealousy, head-on:
1) I show myself the TRUTH about jealousy…
Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous. Proverbs 27:4
What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? 2 You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. James 4:1-2
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 1 Corinthians 13:4
If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. James 3:13-15
2) I confess my jealousy to God
3) I pray that God help me STOP jealous ideas before they become full-on thoughts (Romans 12:2)
4) I intentionally pray and cheer for the one I am jealous of.
Remember, jealousy is a makeup that doesn’t look good on any face and love is a makeup that looks good on every face!
