The cliche, “green with envy,” is a lil off. God said, “
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” What rots, turns black. So it’s more like, “black with envy.” UGH! And jealousy is an attitude toward another person but envy is an attitude toward another person’s
success. Double UGH! Envy started in Genesis 1 and we’re still writing its history. It’s a dark part of our human nature & virtually untreatable without God. Envy is always just around my corner because as I strive to do my best,
there’s someone else doing it better. And though I’ve taken it on full-force, it never really dies, it just lies dormant until it decides to attack again. All of us have the propensity to be envious because we are human. But at the onset of envy’s attack, we can “kill it, dead,” with these actions: One, ask God to forgive us. Two, pray for the one we’re envious of. Three, find ways to verbally or virtually encourage the one we’re envious of. And four, keep our resolve to not let envy win. God in our heart is greater than the envy in our bones. Hey, you got this!
The joy of the Lord is my strength. A merry heart doeth good like a medicine. A broken spirit dries up the bones. I’m not sure why you “turn green with envy,” except that green sometimes is also the color of the pus of an infection…a greenish yellow. And indeed, envy is like an infection that if not treated, expurgated and healed, can grow to consume the entire person, infecting their soul and everything he or she touches. The cure? Knowing God’s love encompasses us, knowing that God has a purpose and plan for each of us that NO ONE ON THIS PLANET EXCEPT US, OUR UNIQUE FINGERPRINT of the soul can enact. He has a specific plan and purpose for every one of us. To envy someone else is to not know what God’s purpose is for us here. Once we know our walk in Him and with Him and Him in us, then we do not envy or wish we were like someone else. We can’t be when we have to do what He wants for our lives. Envy is the mark of someone fearful, insecure and afraid that God has abandoned him/her. He has not. He is with us, even when we think He isn’t. So it’s time to get about our Father’s business, walk in His will and His way and be happy in what He has given us to do which is something only He can tell us and something only we can know. Far be it for anyone else to suggest what His plan is for our lives. It’s just not of the Spirit of the Lord and of our own relationship with Him.

God has been working on this in my life along with judgement of others. Praying for those we are envious or jealous of, along with remembering that social status truly means next to nothing in the Eyes of our Jesus is so helpful. Only when we desire to be a servant of all will we find peace. It’s not about standing in the spotlight. It’s about being behind the spotlight and aiming it towards our God so that others may find Him in their darkness. Such a great post, Heather.
